Gifts 18: Commuting CD Traffic Mix

No this isn’t a CD with all Traffic (the band) songs. It’s a CD mix idea that involves a bunch of songs I feel are great for the fun commute you have to deal with each day. I’ve compiled 12 songs that I think are prefect to listen to while you stuck in traffic. I chose 12 because that seems to be a popular number for tracks on CDs.

All American Rejects - Move Along
“Even when your hope is gone move along, move along.”
The song is titled “Move Along”, what else do you need? It really is a great song, as is the whole album, so you should definitely check it out.

Cake - The Distance
“He’s going the distance, he’s going for speed.”
Probably the best known Cake song and a perfect fit for a traffic related CD mix. Listen to the lyrics while you’re driving and you’ll feel the pain of the guy still driving and the girl that’s waiting for him.

Eagles - Life In The Fast Lane
“Life in the fast lane, surely make you lose your mind.”
The title pretty much says it all. Besides, you really can’t go wrong with a song from the Eagles.

Offspring - Bad Habit
“When I’m in my car don’t give me no crap, cuz the slightest thing and I might just snap.”
Okay, so it’s not a very happy song. But if you’re feeling a bit of road rage, you’ll definitely connect with this one.

Styx - Come Sail Away
“I’ve got to be free, free to face the life that’s ahead of me.”
It may be about sailing, but it’s a journey that you can hopefully escape into while you’re stuck in your own travels.

Animals - We’ve Gotta Get Out Of This Place
“We’ve gotta get out of this place if it’s the last thing we ever do.”
Another one with a title that says it all. If you’re really jammed, rock out to this one. You can go ahead and headbang to the chorus, I won’t tell.

Green Day - Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
“Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road.”
Though I doubt you’re having the “time of your life” on the road, hopefully you can calm yourself down to this nice enjoyably relaxing Green Day song.

Gun N’ Roses - Welcome To The Jungle
“Welcome to the jungle, we got fun and games.”
The highways are definitely a concrete jungle - welcome.

Barenaked Ladies - Tonight Is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel
“No commotion, no screaming brakes. Most of it’s over before I awake.”
A funny song about falling asleep at the wheel. Okay, maybe it isn’t funny… or maybe it is.

Doors - Riders of the Storm
“There’s a killer on the road. His brain is squirmin’ like a toad.”
An especially relevant song if you happen to be caught in traffic during a rainstorm.

Sheryl Crow - Every Day is a Winding Road
“Every day is a winding road, I get a little closer.”
Lots of great lines in this song for you to connect with. Try to focus on the “get a little bit closer” lines, hopefully they will give you some hope.

Traffic - Freedom Rider
“Forever, forever. Freedom rider. Here it comes.”
I had to include at least one Traffic track!

Disagree with my list? Have some great songs you think would fit better? Post them in the comments and let everybody know you’re songs are better than mine.

Gifts 17: Maddox’s The Alphabet Of Manliness

The Alphabet Of Manliness by Maddox seems to be one of the most anticipated books by an unknown author that I’ve ever seen.

Ok. In all fairness I don’t read too much or keep up on Oprah’s Book Club, but the new book by Maddox rose to the top of Amazon quite rapidly and is continuing to maintain its position in the top 10. All this from a guy who is an unknown in the offline publishing world. I say offline because he has an enormous cult fan base over at his site The Best Page In The Universe.

If you haven’t checked out that site yet, I highly recommend it. Basically, it’s all about a guy venting about random topics, but in a very brutal and hilarious way. Apparently his book isn’t exactly the same, but it’s in the same vein.

If you or anybody you know is a Maddox fan, or a brutal humor fan, you should definitely check out the book as it’s sure to entertain.

Gifts 15: Cube World Digital Stick People

Okay, so every Gifts post has been a themed collection of gifts thus far. This time, however, I’m featuring just one single gift. It’s so amazing, so incredibly cool, and just so perfect for the office that I just knew it had to have it’s very own post. Without further ado, I present to you…

Cube World Digital Stick People

Cube World Digital Stick People
Yes, that’s right ladies and gentlemen… digital stick people! These seemingly simple and benign little blocks are home to some crazy advanced digital lifeforms! There are four total, each one with a separate gimmick (a rope, a dog, a pole, and a ball). These little guys play games with you, but more importantly play games with each other.

Basically, they are little animated guys that do a bunch of crazy things. It sounds simple enough, but they do so many different and fun things and are actually aware of each other. By that, I mean that if you hook two of the blocks up side by side, they will notice and wave to each other. One might decide to open a door and walk into the other block and hang out for a bit. If one of them is the guy with a ball, he may decide to start throwing it back and forth with his new neighbor.

Can you just imagine the entertainment you can get from these little things at your desk? I sure can.

Gifts 13: Work Comedy DVDs

This edition of office gifts features funny movies with an emphasis on work related humor. Each movie focuses on either the office environment, a specific job, or some other work related humorous situation.

Office Space DVD

Office Space - Special Edition
Perhaps the greatest office related comedy in recent times, if not ever. If you haven’t seen the movie, you MUST. It tackles everything from stupid TPS (progress) reports, lay-offs, paper jams, and even wearing pieces of flair!

Caddyshack DVD

Caddyshack
Caddyshack is a great comedy featuring Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, golf, and a gopher… what else could you want? In case you need to know the plot and are too lazy to click the link, it’s about a stuck up golf club and a fun rich guy who mixes it all up.

Trading Places DVD

Trading Places
Another classic comedy, this time featuring Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd. The movie deals with the stock exchange, how anybody can be a broker, and how to manipulate it all. Features not only some funny moments, but a pretty good insight into some of the workings of the stock exchange.

Super Troopers DVD

Super Troopers
I’m not going to lie, I didn’t care for Super Troopers much, but just about everybody I know loved it. In case you’re interested, it’s about a bunch of under-achieving state troopers and.. well, that’s about it really.

Airplane DVD

Airplane!
Even though this movie definitely shows its age, it’s still good for a few laughs. What’s the movie about? Well, it’s called “Airplane!” so I’m sure you can figure that out :) It’s probably the cheesiest movie of the bunch, but that’s why you’ll laugh.

Anchorman DVD

Anchorman - The Legend Of Ron Burgundy
Okay, another movie I didn’t care for much. Anchorman is actually one of the worst favorite movies, that I’ve ever seen. Why is it on this list? Because it fits “office humor” so perfectly well… also, I do know people that absolutely love the movie.

I know I there’s plent of other work related comedies out there, so I’ll probably post another installment at a future date… until then, make sure you’ve at least seen Office Space and Trading Places!
