I found this interesting study that shows how many readers react negatively towards writers that use big words when smaller ones would do.

I’ve long hated it when people use overly complex words when it’s clear they are doing it just to sound smarter. If you’re doing something to try and appear smarter than you are, you’ve already shown yourself to not be so smart.
File that under a veritable cornucopia of microcosms and eccentricities.
