Ok, this isn’t really office related, but since today is Veteran’s Day (here in the USA at least) and many have work off because of that (such as myself), I figure I should make a gift list dedicated to some good war flicks.
- Saving Private Ryan
- One of my favorite war movies with one of my favorite actors, Tom Hanks. WW2 movie about a squad being sent behind enemy lines to bring back a single soldier. The opening sequence is one of the most powerful you’ll ever experience.
- Full Metal Jacket
- A great movie with my favorite portrayal of bootcamp. The movie seems like two separate movies, with the first half at bootcamp and the second half in Vietnam, both presented extremely well.
- Platoon
- This is considered a classic war movie by most. It’s another movie about the Vietnam War, emphasizing the war that rages on amongst the members of a particular squad.
- The Great Escape
- This is a fantastic war movie, dealing with being inside a prison camp in Germany in WW2. Many of the scenes in this movie have been parodied in recent years (most scenes from the movie Chicken Run
are pulled straight from The Great Escape).
- Patton
- Yet another movie about WW2. Patton is considered to be one of the best war movies by many, and is definately a great movie in my book. It’s fairly long (nearly three hours) and does have some slow points (it is very much a biography of a single man rather than the entire war itself), but it’s still great movie that gives a great look into the mind of an intriguing man.
- Pearl Harbor
- A pretty good movie about the attack on Pearl Harbor. It does try to bring in a lot of non war elements (like a somewhat forced love story), but it’s still a decent war movie with some great action scenes.
